Boys Street Funk is similar to Break Dancing, but without the high-risk
tricks eg spinning on head.
The classes are designed for seven to twelve year olds. Students dance
in a boys-only environment to facilitate a more masculine style of
movement. Boys learn movements such as:
-
Coffee grinders
-
Worms
-
Helicopters
While doing dance lessons can sometimes have a stigma attached for boys,
we find that our Boys Street Funk students are not only happy to
acknowledge that they do Boys Funk lessons, but often share the tricks
and skills they learn in our classes with their school friends.
Having been introduced to dance by these classes, some of our boys then
wish to develop their dance technique further by attending our
mainstream jazz/funk classes or ballet classes. Ballet is recommended
for those boys who show talent in sporting fields, especially
gymnastics. When boys attend our mainstream classes, we ensure that the
choreography, costuming and movements reflect their masculinity.
Uniform
There is no set uniform for Boys Street Funk. Boys are
welcome to purchase a black Dance Max T-Shirt, black jazz pants & black
jazz sneakers, however this is entirely optional. In any event, boys
should wear clothing which is comfortable to move in & sneakers.
